Cute Cat Friday 2018-08-10: Joni

Enjoying the view from our dining table -- which has finally been shipped across from the UK to our new home in Toronto.

In the background is a photo of the late and much missed Dexter.

Cute Cat Wednesday Classic: 2018-02-07

Originally published 2015-01-02.

Planned for last Friday, but I was on an epic drive to retrieve some rugby tickets, and subsequently very busy. (I'm disgruntled that after all my efforts Scotland's performance against Wales was so wretched, but such is life.)

Cute Cat Friday Classic: 2018-01-19

The lovely Joni is as well and happy as ever, but given our upcoming move and holidays I've decided to revisit some older editions of Cute Cat Friday. This one was first posted on 2014-11-27.

The flu, the EU, and pattern recognition

Not so-called "man flu", but the real deal. I've got a temperature of 38.9 degrees Celsius (that's 102 Fahrenheit for Americans and other aliens), a bad headache, and difficulty standing up for more than a few minutes at a time.

I think I got this from my 16 month old son who was ill last week. He is clearly a lot tougher than he looks, since he shook it off in about three days and I've been feeling like this since Tuesday with the end not yet in sight.

No long blog post this week. Cute Cat Friday going up as usual. I watched the first 30 minutes or so of the first BBC debate on the EU referendum last night, but was unable to tolerate any more in my weakened condition.

Meanwhile, here is a cogent and non-doomsaying article with reasons to vote Remain.

If you need some idle amusement, I've been playing with what-dog.net, which attempts to recognise dog breeds from photos. The real fun starts when you upload photos of things which are not dogs. It thinks I'm a Shetland sheepdog. Also, it was surprisingly accurate on the personality traits of our late cat Dexter:

Cute Cat Friday 2016-01-01: The Year of Four Cats

Ancient Rome had the Year of Four Emperors; this was our Year of Four Cats.

Only Belle was with us at both start and end of 2015; but fervently knocking wood, we hope Joni will be a keeper. The other two of course were the late and much missed Dexter, who passed away in May; and Freddie, who we adopted and kept for two months, but had to send back when he proved too aggressive towards Belle.

Top row: Dexter, Belle. Bottom row: Freddie, Joni. Click for larger versions.

Belle and Joni are gradually growing more tolerant of each other; not yet hanging out in the same room, but we have high hopes of getting there soon.

Incidentally, my new favourite Wikipedia disclaimer is, "not to be confused with the Year of Five Emperors or the Year of Six Emperors".

Cute Cat Friday 2015-06-19: In memoriam Dexter

We will scatter Dexter's ashes in our back garden tomorrow.

Below the fold are some more pictures of our much loved cat, as a chronicle of his life with us.

Not just a cat

Something a family member said, talking about Dexter's passing last month:

You tell yourself he's just a cat, but it still makes you sad.

She's lost pets herself, and knows how hard it is; but in fact, I don't tell myself that. There is no "just" about it. He was a cat, no more and no less.

Rest in peace, Dexter

Dexter passed away on the night of Friday 15 May 2015.

He was a rescue cat and we don't know his exact age, but we think he was about eleven years old. He died of severe anaemia. He had contracted feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), most likely when another cat bit him a few months ago. The anaemia was likely to have been a complication from FIV.

The picture below shows Dexter enjoying the sun on Monday. At the time, we had no reason to think anything was the matter. His end was very sudden; at least he didn't suffer for long. He will be cremated, and we will scatter his ashes in our back garden where he had so many happy times.

I'll write more later about how much Dexter meant to us. For now, I just want to say he was the warmest, gentlest, most adorable feline companion anyone could ask for. We loved him very much. We will miss him terribly and remember him always.

I have set up a Just Giving page for donations to the Blue Cross animal welfare charity in Dexter's memory.

Dexter, 2004? – 2015

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –

Since then – ‘tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses’ Heads
Were toward Eternity –

Cute Cat Friday 2015-05-15: Dexter

I have sad news about Dexter. He is suffering from severe anaemia and has been with the veterinarian overnight, receiving intravenous feeding and a blood transfusion.

He's a brave and much loved cat and we are hoping for the best. Here is a photo of him shortly before he went to the vet, still happy to purr when he is scratched under the chin.

Cute Cat Friday 2015-02-27: Dexter

We assembled the baby's crib last week, and Dexter soon claimed the surplus Moses basket.

Cute Cat Friday 2015-01-30: Dexter

Carrying on the family tradition of supporting the Edmonton Oilers.

I don't think he is pleased with their progress. I'm certainly not; the Oilers' record this season is terrible, second last in the league so I can't even say they have nowhere to go but up. Oh well, there's always next year and next decade.
